I’m organizing this list as three collections: one is a list of fellowships and grant opportunities for women specifically, one is a general list of fellowships that computer science students can apply for, and the final one is for diversity fellowships and interesting opportunities that I find over the next 5+years as PhD student at MIT.

This will be updated as I find more applications and when I have time :)

For Women:

  1. AAUW American Fellowships support women scholars who are completing dissertations (nearly finished PhD students), planning research leave from accredited institutions (post-docs), or preparing research for publication (faculty). Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Candidates are evaluated on the basis of scholarly excellence; quality and originality of project design; and active commitment to helping women and girls through service in their communities, professions, or fields of research. https://www.aauw.org/what-we-do/educational-funding-and-awards/american-fellowships/
  2. Graduate Women in Science National Fellowship Program Awards will be made to women holding a degree from a recognized institution of higher learning, of outstanding ability and promise in research, who are performing hypothesis-driven research at any institution in the U.S. or abroad. Career level(e.g. graduate student vs. assistant professor) of the candidate will be taken into consideration when reviewing the proposals. Awards will be made irrespective of race, religion, nationality, creed, national origin, sexual orientation, or age. Application for the GWIS Fellowships is offered at no cost to current GWIS members, as a member benefit. For non-members, an application processing fee of $50 is required. Fellowships applicants that are not already GWIS members may join GWIS with a 1-year introductory membership at a discounted rate of $40 (click here to join). Financial need of research funding is a requirement for the application. No project that has already been fully funded will be eligible for the awards. https://www.gwis.org/page/fellowship_program

CS Fellowships:

  1. DOE Computational Science Graduate Fellowship In 2018, the DOE CSGF added a new track for those pursuing an advanced degree in applied mathematics, statistics or computer science with research interests that help use emerging high performance systems more effectively. Students in this track will focus on issues in high-performance computing as a broad enabling technology and not on a particular science or engineering application. Examples of appropriate research areas are:Scientific and engineering model development; Algorithm development, analysis and implementation; Programming models and languages; Memory and performance management tools; Performance portability; Workflow analysis and support; Optimization; Uncertainty quantification; Data analytic computing, including artificial intelligence, machine learning, deep learning and pattern detection methods; Future computing technologies, including accelerators and reconfigurable computing, quantum information science and neuromorphic computing https://www.krellinst.org/csgf/about-doe-csgf/eligibility-program-requirements
  2. National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship Program It’s for general STEM fields. https://www.ndsegfellowships.org/eligibility
  3. NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Come with a well-thought out research proposal, three letters of recommendation, and a personal statement that helps you stand out. https://www.nsfgrfp.org
  4. Hertz Fellowship is a competitive, fantastic program with intense interviews and a lot of work involved. You need four letters of rec, and the questions are less about your research and more about “why you chose your field of study, etc. http://hertzfoundation.org/default.aspx
  5. The Open Philanthropy Project AI Fellows Program is clearly only applicable to those that want to make AI and machine learning their main focus. However, previous recipients include one student combining cognitive science, AI, and linguistics to build computational models of how people acquire and understand language, suggesting that interdisciplinary work is also accepted. https://www.openphilanthropy.org/focus/global-catastrophic-risks/potential-risks-advanced-artificial-intelligence/open-philanthropy-project-ai-fellows-program
  6. Snap Research Fellowship Is Snapchat’s fellowship for CS PhD students. Applicants must be PhD students currently enrolled at an accredited college or university and carrying out exceptional research in areas of computer science relevant to Snap, including Artificial Intelligence, Computational Imaging, Computer Graphics, Computer Vision, Data Mining, Data Science, Human-Computer Interaction, Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing, Security, and Speech and Audio Processing, or another related field. https://snap.submittable.com/submit

And Other Random Opportunities:

TBD!
